Simple ways to cook more at home without extra stress

I think that most of us can agree that minimizing the amount of ultra-processed, prepared and fast foods in our life is generally a good thing.

The foods we make ourselves are usually:

  • More nutrient dense

  • Better tasting (because we made it ourselves!!!)

  • More economical

  • Less wasteful

  • Full of ingredients we know (and like)

As the seasons change through the year, I’m newly excited to get into the kitchen and change up my food wardrobe a bit.  I love a good, hearty stew in the dead of winter and a smoky outdoor bbq in the summer, but some tastes have their own season to them, don’t you think?

How does the thought of kicking off a new season by cooking up something new in your kitchen make you feel?  Energized and excited? Ready to roll up your sleeves and get chopping?

Or do you feel anxious about the arrival of yet another new season: your kitchen looks like a bomb went off and your diet still feels like a mess?  Are you feeling the urge to clear sh*t out, on the outside and on the inside? Do you feel like you need to start over the “right” way this time?

Do the changing seasons make you think it’s time to jump into some “spring” cleaning?  I’m gonna say “yes”! Now is definitely the time to get started, but probably not in the way you think.

If you’re serious about ditching your overwhelm around food, cooking and what to eat, I’m gonna say the best place to start is in your kitchen. Not with another diet or detox  plan.

New seasons signal a time for and new starts, including starting to get a handle on your nutrition and doing more cooking at home.

So what’s really getting in your way?

My guess is that you’ve got more “nutrition wisdom” than you can use at your fingertips already.  So why are you still reaching for takeout menus when you swore you’d use your kitchen more?  Why is it still a struggle to come up with meals you actually want to eat, feel good about and that don’t take hours to prepare?

If you want to push away the stress around how to feed yourself for real and for good, your kitchen is the place to start.

The solution to getting your act together in your kitchen, to feeling confident and in control of your plate, is hiding in plain sight. Disorganized cupboards and mystery foods lurking in the back of your fridge might be exactly what’s keeping you out of your kitchen in the first place.

Have you ever tried doing a kitchen reset?  A spring cleanup of the contents of your cupboards and your fridge?

Doing a reset isn’t a sexy, fast fix fantasy, but here’s what it will do for you:

  • You’ll know where everything is and can easily find it, which will make it more enjoyable for you to actually cook in your kitchen. (Basic, I know, but essential).

  • Clear out stuff that is worn out or expired, stale or rancid.

  • Remove things that don’t “fit”. Just like different seasons call for different clothes, a new season calls for new foods. Your priorities, how much time you have to cook and even your tastes or preferences might have changed.

  • Simplifies your food planning and saves money, by taking stock of what you already have.

TIP: Your shopping list should start here every week, btw

  • You can now see what tools you’re missing (or really want) and prioritize what you actually need, clearing space for new things.

TIP: Create a wish/need list of storage options and kitchen tools that you’ll actually use.
